Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the ability to question certain rulings from the official, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
