PSG Overcomes Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the prestigious trophy on fourteen different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight French Super Cup title.

The European champions seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice late to seize a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital leveler in the dying seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving decisive attempts from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to complete a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
