Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
