A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
