An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Supported Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Because my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had booked a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the canteen, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with people eating there.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did, and I explained that I had newly finished with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the university – close to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but right away informed my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
